The Mid States Tournament Association (MSTA) held their 4th of 6 qualifying tournaments Sunday, July 11, 2010 out of Camp Branch Marina at Smithville Lake.  Anglers faced on and off storms throughout the day, with heavy downpours at times, but overall temperatures where pleasant in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.

If you haven’t fished an MSTA format, you are really missing out on a great day on the water, the MSTA’s are a pro-am style tournament as far as drawing for partners but ends up fishing like a buddy tournament. The boater and non-boater combine their fish to make the teams five fish limit, it is a great format and makes for a relaxing day on the water, where each in the boat encourages the other to catch fish, it can be a great learning experience for anglers as a lot of information and techniques are shared. The next MSTA event is to be held August 1st, if interested call Smithville Marine at 816-532-4000.

Smithville Marine is the title sponsor of the 2010 MSTA circuit. Anglers can cash in with extra incentives at each MSTA tournament: The Smithville Marine bonus bucks program rewards anglers an additional $500.00 in winnings just for running a boat from Smithville Marine, the Stratos 2X Program where anglers can double their winnings up to $10,000.00 and the Skeeter Real Money where anglers can take home an additional $2,000.00 in winnings. Today was one of those days win the winner of the tournament cashed in big time because they were running a Smithville Marine purchased boat.  When purchasing your next boat, give Smithville Marine the chance to earn your business; for fisherman choose from their huge selection of Stratos, Skeeter, Xpress or Lund boats. Stratos boats will soon be unveiling their three Stratos Champion Elite Series of boats, which will be sure to be a hit for the old Champion brand loyalist. Production of the 183 (18 foot), 202 (19 foot) and 210 (20 foot) is based on a highly acclaimed, performance based designs and will be a great new addition to the already awesome line of Stratos boats for 2011.

Now on to today’s results:

Taking first place was the team of Rich Clark and Sean Self. This team weighed in a five fish limit weighing 14.50 lbs. This team had a total of 8 keeper fish on the day, with their best 5 coming before 9:30 a.m. They concentrated on main lake points dragging a Jewel Eakins finesse jig and small trailer and a shaky head worm. Rich threw the Eakins jig on a 7 foot custom rod from the Rod Shop. Sean took home $375.00 on the non-boater side. Rich took home $1,050.00 for the win, $198.00 for second big bass on the boater side with a 4.96 lb. fish. Since Rich was fishing out of his Stratos boat that he purchased from Smithville Marine he pocketed an additional $1,050.00 via the Stratos 2X Program and another $500.00 in incentive money thanks to the Smithville Marine Bonus Bucks program! It pays to run a boat from Smithville Marine!

Second place went to Steve Fogarty and Darryl Glassinger with a five fish limit weighing 12.28 lbs. Steve and Darryl fished windblown banks most of the day and again the major them was a jig, with all of their fish being caught in 4 to 6 foot of water. A Jewel 7/16 ounce spider jig accounted for 4 fish with one fish being caught on a Bagley square bill crankbait. Steve took home $750.00 and Darryl pocketed $300.00.

Third place went to Mike Payne and Don Enloe with 4 fish that weighed 12.08 lbs. This team used a variety of baits to catch their fish, with one fish coming on a crankbait, one fish on a spinnerbait of out of a grass line and two fish on a 10” worm off of standing timber.   Mike also reported catching a walleye in the 8 lb. range on the 10” worm off a tree – there were definitely a few anxious moments, until they finally figured out it wasn’t a bass! Mike took home $525.00 for third place. Don won $225.00 for third place and also took home an additional $64.00 for third big bass on the non-boater side with a 3.72 lb. fish.

Big bass of the day on the boater side went to Bruce Black with a 5.56 lb. Smithville toad. This fish was caught in 5 foot of water of a tree in the Camp Branch arm of the lake - $330.00.

Big bass on the non-boater side went to Bill Oryshyn with a 4.06 lb. fish. Bill’s fish was also caught on a 10” worm but it was caught out of the grass in 4 foot of water early in the day - $160.00.
